Hyperliquid vs Bybit: DEX vs CEX Perps Compared

Hyperliquid and Bybit both run deep perpetual futures markets, but on opposite models. Hyperliquid is a self-custodial, on-chain order book on its own L1 — no account, no identity check, you hold the keys. Bybit is a large custodial exchange that holds customer funds, requires identity verification for full functionality, and connects to fiat on-ramps. Neither model is objectively better; the right one depends on what a trader is optimizing for.

Verdict

A custody decision, not a fee decision. Pick Bybit if fiat on-ramps, a mature app, and market breadth outweigh who holds your funds and identity checks aren't a blocker. Pick Hyperliquid for self-custody, no-KYC onboarding, and a fully published fee schedule — its entry taker (0.045%) and maker (0.015%) both undercut Bybit's non-VIP 0.055% / 0.02%, though there's no recovery if you lose your keys. Some traders use both.

Custody & KYC

This is the core structural split between the two platforms. Hyperliquid never takes custody of trader funds — positions settle directly on its own L1, and access is through a self-custodial wallet or an email-based login, with no document upload or identity review anywhere in onboarding. Bybit is the opposite: a centralized exchange that holds customer balances directly, where completing identity verification is required to unlock full account functionality, including higher withdrawal limits and fiat services. Hyperliquid also blocks US users; check Bybit's own terms for availability in your jurisdiction.

Self-custody means no counterparty holds a trader's funds, but also no support recourse if a wallet key is lost — see our Hyperliquid KYC page for the full breakdown of what "no KYC" does and doesn't mean.

Fees

Hyperliquid's perp fee schedule is fully published: a base rate of 0.045% taker / 0.015% maker, reduced by volume tiers (trailing 14-day weighted volume), by staking HYPE (5% to 40% off depending on tier), and by a 4% discount on the first $25M of volume when trading through a referral link. Funding is charged separately, settles hourly, and is paid peer-to-peer between long and short holders — Hyperliquid doesn't take a cut. See our Hyperliquid fees breakdown for the full tier tables.

Bybit's schedule, verified against its own fee-rate page on 2026-07-22 (an earlier version of this page couldn't verify these numbers and said so): non-VIP accounts pay 0.02% maker / 0.055% taker on perpetuals and futures, improving through VIP tiers down to 0% maker / 0.03% taker at the top published tier (Supreme VIP), with a separate 10% discount for paying fees in MNT. Side by side at the entry level: Hyperliquid's taker rate (0.045%) undercuts Bybit's (0.055%), and its maker rate (0.015%) undercuts Bybit's (0.02%) — before either venue's discounts. Bybit's VIP ladder eventually beats Hyperliquid's base rates, but that's a comparison between a high-volume Bybit account and Hyperliquid's own volume tiers, which also improve. Rates change; check both venues' live pages before trading on a fee edge.

Where Bybit wins

Bybit's genuine advantages come from being a mature, large-scale centralized exchange: deep derivatives liquidity, established mobile and desktop trading tools, direct fiat on-ramps, and the custodial convenience of not managing a wallet or seed phrase. For traders who value account recovery and fiat rails over self-custody, that combination is a real draw.

Where Hyperliquid wins

Hyperliquid's advantages are structural: self-custody means no exchange ever holds a trader's funds, onboarding requires no identity verification, and the order book is on-chain and transparent rather than operated behind closed doors. Its full fee schedule — base rates, every volume tier, every staking discount — is published in official docs and independently verifiable — and stable enough that this page's Hyperliquid numbers haven't needed correcting since launch, while Bybit's took a week of retries to verify at all. Funding is also simpler to reason about, since it flows directly between counterparties rather than through the exchange.

Which to pick

Pick Bybit if fiat on-ramps, a mature mobile app, and market breadth matter more than who holds your funds, and identity verification isn't a blocker. Pick Hyperliquid if self-custody, no-KYC onboarding, and a transparent fee schedule matter more than fiat convenience — with the tradeoff that there's no support to fall back on if a wallet key is lost. Some traders reasonably use both rather than treating this as exclusive.

FAQ

What are Bybit's fees?

For non-VIP accounts: 0.02% maker / 0.055% taker on perpetuals and futures, per Bybit's own fee-rate page (verified 2026-07-22). VIP tiers reduce both sides, and paying fees in MNT adds a 10% discount. Check Bybit's live fee page for the rate at your specific account tier.

Is Hyperliquid safer than Bybit?

"Safer" depends on the risk being weighed. Self-custody on Hyperliquid removes exchange counterparty risk — no platform can freeze or lose custody of funds it never held — but shifts key-security responsibility entirely onto the trader. Bybit's custodial model is the reverse tradeoff. Neither is universally safer; they carry different risk types.

Can I use Bybit without KYC?

No — Bybit requires identity verification for full functionality, and this page doesn't cover workarounds. Hyperliquid, by contrast, has no KYC step at all — see our Hyperliquid KYC page for details.
